who am i?

Life lesson #236: it is never too late do discover who (or what) you are… in my case, it took me 59 years to finally declare, “why, yes, i am an artist!”

So begins my artistic journey. I am not formally trained in this endeavor (though i did earn my Bachelors degree in liberal arts from the University of California at Irvine in 1989.) My artistic inspiration? I grew up in a household full of fine art and classical music. My mom filled our mornings with the music of Vivaldi, Satie and Debussy. The artwork in our house was mostly my father’s. He was a talented and prolific painter, active from the 1950’s to the early 2000’s. His bag was abstract expressionism, inspired by the likes of Richard Diebenkorn, Hans Hoffman and Willem de Kooning. Over time his work evolved to a more hard edge style (think Barnett Newman or Karl Benjamin.) It was this aesthetic that i inherited, and i am eternally grateful for my parents introducing me to this wonderful world of color, texture and composition.

I grew up in Santa Barbara, California, though i have also called Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, and Newport Beach, California and Santa Fe, New Mexico my home (I moved a lot!)

I currently reside in Portland, Oregon.

Past Projects: a love of furniture…

this was an idea i had for a coffee table, where i incorporated small flower vases in the center. The tabletop was a piece of birch ply with flush mounted washers covering the vases.

years later i refined my table vase idea into a console table. i layered baltic birch for the top and added a vent into which flowers could be placed.

an early execution of mine. i loved the idea of mixing bright mexican tile with brushed steel. still do.

i had a local welder make this base. i made the top out of solid zebrawood. a beautiful table, but impractilally heavy.
